From its earliest days, the Christian church has moved outward. Disciples moved away from their home cultures, sharing their faith with strangers whose ways were new to them. We are still called to overcome boundaries. Christ the King offers opportunities to engage in service and mission work throughout the United States and overseas.
Mission and Servant Trips
Each year, CTK offers mission trips for youth and adults. These one- and two-week opportunities are transformational, and team members return with a renewed passion and zeal for the Lord! For details on coming trips, check out the Mission and Servant Trip page.
Fair-Trade Coffee and Tea
Proverbs 13:23 says, “A poor man's field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away.” Christ the King is a strong supporter of the Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project, which ensures that more of the money we spend on coffee reaches the farmers in developing countries who actually grow it. Fair Trade coffee is a simple solution that means the difference – quite literally – between surviving and not surviving for small-scale coffee farmers. Packaged coffee is available the second Sunday of every month and is served at all Christ the King events.
Quilts
The quilters make beautiful, colorful quilts that are given to local families through PLM-Families Together and to people in need around the world through Lutheran World Relief. They make more than 100 quilts each year. The Lutheran World Relief quilts might be sent to orphanages, refugee camps, disaster sites or hospitals. They are used not only as blankets but also as room dividers, beds, sacks to carry belongings and sometimes even homes.
Health Kits
Lutheran World Relief provides health kits in places of need around the world. Throughout the year, CTK will collect health kits. Check the Courier newsletter for donation and assembly details. LWR’s cost to handle and ship one health kit overseas is $2.65. If you would like to donate toward the shipping and handling, please write a check to CTK and put "Health Kits" in the memo. For a list of items included in each health kit, go to www.lwr.org/beinvolved/healthkit.asp.
Missionary
Christ the King currently supports one missionary overseas. Karen Anderson serves in Santiago, Chile. She works with EPES, an organization that explores the role of the church in the struggle for health and human rights. If you'd like to send Karen a card to encourage her in her ministry, drop it off at the church office. Click here for more on ELCA Global Missionaries and their work overseas. Check out more about Karen, EPES and their relief work after the earthquake.
Seminarian Support
We support Katrina Vigen, granddaughter of one of our long-time CTK families (the Albings), in her studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA. Read Katrina's January 2013 letter to the congregation.
