At Christ the King, we offer several opportunities to help the hungry and needy, especially those in our community.
Through BackPack Buddies, the InterFaith Food Shuttle puts nutritious food in the hands and homes of food-insecure children. The second Tuesday of every month, September-May, Christ the King visits InterFaith Food Shuttle to assist in the packing of Backpacks. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please sign up to receive BackPack Buddy emails on ChurchPost or contact Karen Maxwell.

Church World Service (CWS) CROP Walk
Church World Service is a cooperative ministry of 37 Christian denominations working to eradicate hunger and poverty, and providing sustainable development, disaster relief, and refugee assistance around the world. Members include the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Episcopal Church, The United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, the Presbyterian Church, the Disciples of Christ, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and several Baptist organizations.
CWS CROP Walks are held annually around the country to raise money for local and world hunger relief. Last year people across the U.S. joined together in 1,434 CWS-sponsored CROP Walks raising 13.4 million dollars. Most of the revenue was distributed to the neediest regions of the world, but one quarter of the funds remained with local hunger-fighting programs – food banks, soup kitchens and community gardens.
Christ the King hosts the Cary CROP Walk each fall on the first Sunday in October. Participants walk or run a 5K or 10K through a Cary neighborhood to raise money and awareness of the 24,000 people dying each day of hunger-related issues. The 2013 Cary CROP Walk was on Sunday October 6.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels serves up hot and nutritious lunches, Monday through Friday, to the elderly, homebound, and disabled of the community. One day a month, volunteers go to Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary and pick up six to 10 dinners and drinks. Volunteers receive directions and addresses, and they go to each recipient’s house to drop off the meal and some good cheer.
Food Drives & Dorcas Ministries Support
Christ the King holds occasional food drives at off-season times of the year to resupply local food pantries. In addition, we support Dorcas Ministries Food Pantry. Christ the King specifically supports the personal hygiene shelf at Dorcas Ministries. Members can bring their donated personal hygiene supplies to church and place them in the bin located in the narthex.
ELCA World Hunger Appeal
ELCA World Hunger is a connected, comprehensive and compassionate program that helps individuals and communities lift themselves out of poverty into self-sufficiency. The international work of ELCA World Hunger is carried out with trusted partners, notably Lutheran World Relief and The Lutheran World Federation. Because of these long-held connections to partners around the world, ELCA World Hunger efforts are efficient and effective. Christ the King raises funds for the World Hunger appeal throughout the year.
We recycle egg cartons for use by the Interfaith Food Shuttle. Bring your empty cartons to church and put them in the bins by the parlor.
